Quietly Making a Difference
Urban Cats started nearly a year ago in November, 2007. Since that time, it's moved quietly to help both individuals and feral cats in the Midlands by providing support and resources to ensure a healthier environment for our community's feral cat population. How has our support been received? Pretty well!
In just 10 months, Urban Cats has established and refined spay/neuter protocols at the HSPCA's spay/neuter clinic, has built a database that tracks both feral cats and feral colonies and has dedicated a funding source to the program (click here to support our efforts!). And, so far, Urban Cats is tracking 51 colonies in the Midlands, ranging in size from 3 cats to 41, with an approximate total population of 464 cats. Best of all, the HSPCA spay/neuter clinic has participated in sterilizing and vaccinating 155 of those cats so far this year. That's roughly 33% of the cats we're tracking.
Of course, many thanks go to all of the caretakers who've practiced responsible feral cat management and who've actively participated in Urban Cats. A quiet change is taking place... trap-neuter-return is continuing to deliver results as a solution to feral cat overpopulation.
