Pacino - A Recycl-a-Bull!
In January 2009, the Humane Society was contacted by a concerned citizen who found an injured Pit Bull on her property. When she first came upon Pacino, she thought he was dead. Laying quietly on the ground, she was startled to find that he was alive. Enter the Humane Society's Recycl-a-Bull Project.
In 2008, the Humane Society launched Recycl-a-Bull, a project in which Pit Bulls rescued by the Humane Society who had been used in fighting rings were brought back to health and rehabilitated. In May of 2008, two Pit Bulls seized in an alleged fighting case – Chance and Carmella - where the first two graduates of the Humane Society Recycl-a-Bull project.
Pacino had the classic signs of a Pit Bull used to train other Pit Bulls to fight in the ring. Dubbed “bait dogs” they are chosen for their docile nature so that the dogs in training and their trainers are not hurt during practice sessions. Pacino’s mouth was wired shut during trial fights. His front and back legs were riddled with cuts and scars from which he had no defense.
Within two weeks of being in the custody of the Humane Society, Pacino’s rib-bones and spine became less prominent. His scars began to heal at around 4 weeks. Now, you can find Pacino bouncing around his foster home with five other dogs and two kids. He loves watching TV, playing with the other dogs, but especially being held and loved by his two-legged foster family members.
Pacino has a more serious role as well - he is now the Humane Society spokesdoggy for the Recycl-a-Bull project. He is slated to make several appearances at area schools and community events to spread awareness on animal abuse and to dispel the bad rap Pit Bulls have been given.
Howl Rollers Vegas Night - May 1, 2009!
We are in the count down to the Humane Society signature fundraiser - Howl Rollers Vegas Night! Last year, the Humane Society held its first ever large-scale fundraiser - The Mane Event - to help care for 45 Arabian Horses seized in a cruelty case. It was such a success, we decided to do a signature fundraiser every year!
While Howl Rollers is not a fundraiser specifically for the Arabian Horses, the money raised at Howl Rollers Vegas Night will help us continue their care as well as investigate animal cruelty, help support other animals we are currently caring for, and fund programs like Pet Soup, which distributes pet food to the clients of Harvest Hope Food Bank and much more.
Howl Rollers will feature fabulous food by Southern Way Catering, an open bar, Vegas style entertainment, Jazz by the Tony Lee Trio, a silent auction and a special appearence by Elvis!
Join us Friday, May 1, 2009, from 7 pm to 11 PM at the Millstone at Adams Pond, 5301 Bluff Road, Columbia, SC 29209! Tickets are $125 per person/$200 per couple and can be purchased online at www.humanesc.org or at the Humane Society office, located at 121 Humane Lane, Columbia, SC 29209.
Want to help with Howl Rollers? We are currently soliciting silent auction items for Howl Rollers. We are seeking gift certificates, art, weekend trips, home decor, sporting equipment, tickets to events - you name it! Contact Kelly Graham at 803-783-1267 ext. 17 for more information.
